I've posted detailed answer to TeX.sx. I've just added the code from that answer to TeX4ht source code, so it should work correctly soon.

Originally, I thought this was on my end, but it is reproducible on all systems I've tried: https://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/595503

When building the .dvi file for the above example, tex4ht results in a "sh: .tfm: command not found" error, seeming to not understand that [FontAwesome5Free-Solid-900.otf]:script=latn; should be interpreted as an OTF file.
