--disable-rpath is actually a misnomer, as it is added by gettext framework and affects only linking with libintl. I guess the issue would be better brought up upstream.

Hi,
even building with option --disable-rpath does not removes RPATH from gdbm_dump|load, gdbmtool and libgdbm_compat.so
