Also, one of the issues reports that the verbatim package gets this right. This may or may not be true, but if so, it should be a source of a solution.

My guess is that somehow we need to mark the added spaces as "not really spaces" for copying purposes.

When the listings package generates a program listing in something other than "fullflexible" spacing, it inserts lots of kerns to make up the appropriate spacing.

Unfortunately, these then show up as spaces when a user attempts to copy the text out of the resulting PDF file. This is a serious usability problem in the modern world.
